Traditional Motifs of the Lao Ethnic Group in Vietnam

To mark the return to stock of our flagship cushions: The Dokmai, Opportunity for Women is dedicating an article to explaining the background and meanings of these superb ethnic patterns that adorn our cushions.

The Lao Ethnic Group:

The collection is woven by the Laoc ethnic group of Dien Bien Phu in the Northeast of Vietnam. This ethnic group brings together more than 11,000 people all originally from Laos.

The cooperative created by Opportunity for Women uses cotton grown without irrigation and dyes made from local flora.

Lao Patterns:

These are women from the Lao minority in Vietnam who cultivate, spin, dye and then weave the cotton of these beautiful fabrics using ancestral manual techniques.

These very particular patterns that we find on our cushions represent flowers which are called Dokmai in the weavers' dialect.

TrendEthics has a catalog of 11 traditional patterns that are more or less difficult to make. Indeed, Dokmai cushions do not all have exactly the same flower pattern. Opportunity for Women decided to weave a different pattern for each color in order to obtain unique color and cushion matches.
